This practical half-day in-person workshop is designed for home support workers and volunteers in CHSP-funded aged care who want to build their confidence in supporting older people experiencing mental health challenges.
With a relaxed, conversational format and plenty of real-life examples, this session will help you feel more equipped to notice warning signs, respond appropriately, and know when to refer.
You’ll be part of a small group – maximum 10 participants.
What You'll Learn
Mental health 101 – Understanding mental health, mental illness and psychosocial disability
Spot the signs – Common mental illnesses in older people and how they present
Culture & context – A look at how attitudes to mental health in Australia have changed over the last 50 years
Referral basics – Telling the difference between dementia, delirium and psychosis, plus basic warning signs for suicide and self-harm
Communication tools – Using supportive, trauma-informed and strength-based language
Setting boundaries – Simple strategies.
