Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Mental Health First Aid

This 2-day, in-person course equips participants with the confidence, skills and cultural understanding to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders who may be experiencing a mental health issue or crisis. 

Course Schedule 

Day 1 – Monday 5 May, 9 am to 5 pm 
Day 2 – Tuesday 6 May, 9 am to 5 pm 

By registering, you're booking into the 2-day course. You must attend both days to complete the course.

What You'll Learn

  • How to recognise and respond to mental health issues in Elders 

  • Early signs of distress, crisis or worsening mental health 

  • Evidence-based supports and treatment options 

  • How to provide culturally safe, respectful support until professional help is available 

    Each participant receives a copy of the Older Person Mental Health First Aid Manual

Certification 

Participants who complete the course receive Mental Health First Aid accreditation, valid for 3 years. This is an internationally recognised certification. The course is also recognised by Suicide Prevention Australia as a safe and effective suicide prevention program. 

Who Should Attend?

This course is for people who work with First Nations Elders in Aboriginal Community Controlled organisations or CHSP-funded programs. 

Cost

There’s no cost to attend if you work in CHSP-funded aged care or an Aboriginal Community Controlled organisation. 

Meet Your Facilitator 

Baydon Widdicombe, Mental Health First Aid Australia 

Baydon is a proud Darug man living on Dja Dja Wurrung Country in Central Victoria. He is passionate about reducing mental health stigma through sharing knowledge and opening up discussions. Baydon works with local communities to build capacity and support community-led suicide prevention. Outside of work, Baydon is a foster carer and enjoys time away in the caravan.
